Advice from Yorkshire Wildlife Trust:

If you are lucky enough to spot an adder, keep your distance wherever possible and enjoy from afar. Adders are shy and secretive animals, enjoying basking in the sun at this time of year when they are at their most active. They much prefer to slink into the undergrowth rather than confront and only tend to bite in defence if they are disturbed or trod on. They are protected creatures who have sadly lost much of their habitat – but enjoy dry, warm and heathland soils.
