Selby District AVS update 16 June

 It's Learning Disability Week

The importance of friendships during lockdown

This week (15 to 21 June) is Learning Disability Week and it is all about the importance of friendships during lockdown.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, we have all been living in lockdown. Many people with a learning disability have been unable to see their friends and families. But Natasha's story shows how people are finding new ways to keep in touch during this unusual time.

We want to celebrate the incredible friendships and connections that make up our #MencapFamily. Whether it's a friend you know from Mencap, a family member, a support worker or someone you support - we're asking you to give your #MencapFamily a shout out on social media.

There are lots of other ways you can take part:

Sign up for befriending

Befriending can help reduce the loneliness and isolation that lockdown has made worse for many people with a learning disability. Email friendships@mencap.org.uk to find out more.

Create a friendship flag

The pack includes how to make a friendship flag that shows all the things you like or miss about your friend. Then you can share this with your friend on a video call.

Learn 'friend' in Makaton

Take a look at the fantastic Lucinda and Nikki teaching Makaton for 'friend' to celebrate Learning Disability Week 2020. Why not watch and see if you can do it too?

Download our social media pack

If you use social media and want to spread the word about Learning Disability Week 2020 you may find our social media pack useful.

We also have Elizabeth from Carers UK as our expert all week on Mencap's online community. Please join us and ask any questions you have about being a carer.
